Since SQL server 2008 you had the option to change the colour of the status bar in the query window for different SQL server connections. This is done by changing the custom colour in the connection property when you connect or register a database server. Unfortunately there is a bug when you change the connection of an existing query window and the colour doesn’t change. This is solved in Service Pack 1 of SQL server 2008R2 and it should be solved in Denali. If you like to add a colour bar at the top of the query window, you can download SSMS Toolspack
